Waiting in three acts
sound opera for a specific exterior
"... let us wander through the great modern city, and let us observe more with our ears than with our eyes, distinguishing the sound of water, air, or gas in the metal pipes, the soft whirring of machines that quite undoubtedly breathe and pulsate as if alive, the beating of the flaps, the rumble of pistons, the grinding of gears, the crash of tram wheels on the rails, the cracking of the whip, the fluttering of canvas blinds and flags. "
- Luigi Rusollo: The Art of Noise. A Futurist Manifesto. 1913
"The whole [city] sounded so strangely, as if there were huge metal plates lying in hollows under the pavement. They rang out in bass whenever a tram passed, it rang like a triangle when a heel hit the pavement, and even a discarded cigarette butt did not go unanswered. I realised that somewhere down there - rather than up there - our every step, slip and jump was being recorded. Some vast echo chamber was translating our movements into tones that sounded all around us, though outside our normal range of audibility."
- Jan Němec: The Possibilities of the Romance Novel. Brno. Host. 2020
According to statistics, human lives are shortened by 1.6 million "healthy years" every year precisely because of sound pollution. Noise is considered the second biggest environmental burden in Europe, after air pollution. Noise levels in Europe exceed the WHO's recommended values, with no significant improvement over the last 10 years. On the contrary, noise pollution is expected to increase in the near future. In countries where sound pollution is more prominent in public debate than in this country, the concept of the 'right to silence' has already become established. In the neighbouring Czech Republic, it has been discussed since about 2017, when a strategic noise mapping was carried out. One of its main findings is that road traffic noise pollution above 55 decibels (a value above the maximum limit recommended by the WHO) affects up to a quarter of the Czech population.
Is anything changing - developmentally, socially, physiologically, mentally, cognitively - in ourselves by living our entire lives in the unrelenting embrace of civilisation's rumble and drone?
Opéra Concrète was created as part of the Sound Topographies series of acoustic events in Bratislava as a project of the ooo association. Its creation was supported by the Fund for the Support of Arts, the Bratislava City Foundation and the Bratislava Self-Governing Region.
